NotesVermont's Colonial Shrine Old First Church of Bennington, named Vermont's Colonial Shrine by Vermont Legislature, the first Church established in the New Hampshire Grants, organized December 3, 1762. The present structure, the most beautiful Georgian church in New England, was erected in 1805-6 by Lavius Fillmore, second cousin of President Fillmore.
