Notes | The Lee Chapel, Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VirginiaThe famous Recumbent Statue of General Lee, executed by Edward Valentine, the noted Richmond sculptor. Valentine, began work on a bust of Lee during his final year at Washington College. After the general's death, Valentine was commissioned to prepare a recumbent statue. In 1883, a special chamber was added to the Lee Chapel to house the Valentine masterpiece, and in the area beneath the statue chamber the Lee family mausoleum was located. The statue is generally held to portray Lee, the general, at rest on his cot in his headquarters tent. |
