Old Korea Images - Photographs - " Dr. John W. Heron, M.D. - First medical missionary (Presbyterian) to be appointed to Korea (1885), and who, with Dr. Horace N. Allen, established the first modern hospital in Seoul (the fore-runner of Severance Hospital). Dr. Heron died after only five years service and was the first to be buried in the Foreign Cemetary allotted by the court. Mrs. Esson M. (Annie Heron) Gale is his eldest daughter. Another daughter, the widow of Charles J. Carroll, jessie lives in Vurginia."
