NotesCommemorating the bitter winter of 1688, when all twelve of a French garrison starved to death, the cross was erected on the site of Father Millet's wooden cross by the Knights of Columbus in 1926 and pronounced a national monument by President Calvin Coolidge. Old Fort Niagara, Youngstown, N. Y., is open to visitors year 'round.
