NotesThe Dunker Church was erected in 1853 by the German Baptist Brethren. During the battle of Antietam Sept. 17, 1862 the wounded of both armies sought and found sanctuary within its walls. The church was seriously damaged by the fire of union batteries during the battles. The building was repaired and worship resumed in the summer of 1864. At this place some of the bitterest fighting of the war between the states took place. It was the key to the Confederate defenses and changed hand several times. It was used as a place of worship until May 1921 when it was severely damaged by a wind storm. The church was rebuilt in 1961-62 by the National Park Service.
