NotesThe first Presbyterian Church was erected in 18332 and in its early days was on several occasions used to protect women and children from possible Indian attacks. The pews, with the exception of a few few benches, were privately owned by subscribers. In the original deed, the north balcony, which has been left intact, was reserved for the slaves.
