Notes | Saint Sophia Cathedral, Los Angeles, seen at night, with the constantly changing colors of the fountain on the North Plaza. Cast stone work in recessed surfaces is highlighted by an elaborate floodlighting system, and provides by day the pleasing shadow effects so essential to exteriors in a sunny climate. This imposing structure, completed in 1952 at a cost of two million dollars, though estimated to be worth far more, is a modern adaption of the centuries-old Byzantine style, originated in the historic Agia Sophia of Justinian at Constantinople, begun in 532 A. D. |
